New Publication - Survival Predictions of Different Arm Circumference Classifications in Patients under Intensive Care
Check out the new article on the Survival predictions of different arm circumference classifications in patients under intensive care, authored by Dr. Ivan K.S. Zapanta, a DFSN alumnus, and his colleagues, published in Elsevier. In this recently published study, the important role of nutritional status in intensive care unit (ICU) outcomes was explored. The research highlights the prognostic value of a bedside measurement, Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC), in identifying muscle loss among critically ill patients.
Highlights:
Patients with a MUAC of less than 23.5 cm, which indicates muscle wasting, were found to be up to four times more likely to experience mortality in the ICU. These findings underscore the urgent need for early nutrition screening, assessment, and intervention as part of standard critical care protocols. This study contributes to the growing evidence that nutritional care is not just supplementary but essential for patient survival and recovery in critical care settings.

New Publication - Assessment of Factors Affecting Filipino Consumers' Purchasing Intent Towards Processed Meat During COVID-19
Check out the new article on the 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬’ 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐃-𝟏𝟗 authored by DFSN faculty member Ms. Gerieka Anapi with her undergraduate thesis advisee Aaron Shaun Ang published in the Food and Humanity Journal.
The study examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Filipino citizens' buying habits regarding processed meat in Metro Manila, Philippines. The researchers used the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to understand the factors influencing changes in food purchasing behaviors during the pandemic. They found that Sustainable Food Choices (SFC), Consumer Attitudes (CA), and Subjective Norms (SN) were the main factors influencing people's intent to buy processed meat. Moreover, they discovered that changes in shopping patterns also played a role in purchasing decisions. The study suggests that while sustainable food choices had a negative impact on purchasing intent, consumer attitudes, subjective norms, and shifts in shopping patterns had a positive effect. Overall, the research sheds light on how the pandemic has influenced consumer behavior regarding food, particularly in relation to processed meat in the Philippines.
